Eagles Holds Off Georgia Gwinnett in Overtime

Oxford, GA - Freshmen Thomas Powell and Arturo Varela combined for 44 points to help lead the Emory Oxford men's basketball team to a 92-89 overtime victory over the Grizzlies of Georgia Gwinnett College. The Eagles improve to 5-7 heading into finals and winter break.

The Eagles had four players in double figures with Powell leading way with a career-high 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Powell also had a team-high 6 steals. Varela scored 21 points on 8-of-20 shooting. Sophomore Aaron Gerber had a career-high of 19 points including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Freshman Shane McCravy scored 15 points to round out the night for the Eagles. Sophomore Bruno Perlicki came off the bench and had a team-high in rebounds (10) and assists (9). 

The Eagles held the advantage at the free-throw line making 25-out-of-31 attempts. Out off their 30 made field goal attemts, 20 of them came off assists. Overall, the Eagles outscored the Grizzlies in overtime 14-11 to get their second-straight victory. 

"Our guys grinded it out last night and the five guys that was playing in the final 18 minutes off the game stepped up big time," commented Head Coach Roderick Stubbs. "Now our guys can turn all of their attention on to finals and winter break."

The Eagles with have a month long hiatus before coming back to action on January 8th against Georgia Highlands. Tipoff will be at 4:00PM.
