The Emory Oxford women's golf team competed in two tournaments this past weekend. Three members, freshmen Bridget Barnsley, Katie Dorton, and Natalie Mason competed in the Bob Jones Tournament held in Greensville, South Carolina in February 16. Then on February 18 and 19, Barnsley and Mason compete in the Converse Spring Invite held in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Bob Jones Tournament
Playing in the first event of the spring, Barnsley led the Eagles with a 2nd place carding at 94. Dorton, who was competing in her first collegiate tournament after a successful cross country season in the fall, finished in 5th place (106) which edged out teammate Mason (111) for the final All-Tournament team spot.
"While the scores were not as low as the team would have liked, they played very well in relations to the rest of the players in the tournament," stated Head Coach Molly McNamara. "The course was very wet which did not allow for any roll off the tee which made the course play much longer which inflated the scores for everyone, but the women responded well. Having two individuals place on the All-Tournament team was a great start to the spring season"
Converse Spring Invite
Barnsley and Mason competed in the Converse College Spring Invitational, which was the first two-day event of the year with a field comprised of primarily NCAA Division II programs. The Carolina Country Club is a championship style course with the bunkers and penalty areas perfectly positioned to make the course difficult and the wet conditions made play more difficult. The playing conditions on Tuesday were very difficult. The temperature likely didn't get above 32 and the women played almost their enter second 9-holes in a steady rain which completely saturated the course.
"The weather on Tuesday was not the type of conditions you like to play golf in, but the women persevered through those conditions and posted better scores on the second day of the tournament which only a handful of players in the tournament were able to do. I am proud of the way that they handled themselves in those conditions and in a tournament with golfers of that quality," stated Coach McNamara.
The Eagles will be back in action in March 30th and 31st, in the Johnson University Invitational.
