Women’s Soccer Edges Georgia Military 3-2; Clinches Spot in District Playoffs

Oxford, GA - Three goals in the second helped the Emory Oxford women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over NJCAA Division I foe, Georgia Military College. The Eagles improve to 5-2 for the season, while the Bulldogs drop to 6-4-1. With this win, Oxford has now clinched a spot in the Mid-Atlantic District Playoffs.

The first half was uneventful, as the game was tied 0-0 at halftime. The action picked up in the second half and the Eagles struck first when freshman Jenna Mathis scored on a free kick from about 35 yards out. This was Mathis' second goal of the year. Later in the game, sophomore captain Hannah Wolfson received a pass and was able to avoid a tackle to put the ball in the back of the net for the Eagles second goal. This was Wolfson's first goal of the season. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs were able to answer right away to cut the Eagle lead.

Later in the half, Oxford was able to stretch the lead when freshman Ellen Harnisch broke free and got past the Bulldog's goalkeeper to score her ninth goal of the season. The Eagles were able to keep a 3-1 lead until the final four minutes when the Bulldogs found a way to score to cut the lead to 3-2. Fortunately, the Eagles were able to keep the lead in route to a spot in the District Playoffs.

"This was a huge win for us tonight and our team played great to get this win," stated Interim Head Coach Harry Kustick. "We had a great crowd to help cheer us on and the RYSA girls was a huge help."

During the game, the RYSA Lady Revs had some of their girls come out and be ball girls for the game. It was a great experience not only for our Eagles but for the Lady Revs as well.

The Eagles will have some time off until their next game. They return to action on Saturday (Oct. 12) as they travel to Alabama to play Holmes Community College. Kickoff is at 3:00PM.
