The women's soccer team performed well last night against their opponent, South Georgia State College, which earned them a 3-2 victory and a birth in the regional tournament. It was the team's fourth game in eight days, but the Eagles looked strong as they held off a comeback from South Georgia State.
After heavy pressure from the Eagles for the first 20 minutes, Nadia Dixon scored the first goal. Five minutes later, sophomore Carson Fleming scored a beautiful goal with a one touch shot from 30 yards out. The team took control in the first half with 12 shots against 3 and went into the the locker room with a 2-0 lead. South Georgia State came out determined to score in the second half and they were not going to let the Eagles have an easy win. They scored within 10 minutes in the second half and tied it up about 8 minutes later. Oxford took over the game in the last 15 minutes and put a lot of pressure on them with their third goal coming with 8 minutes left in the game. That goal came from a free kick about 6 yards away from the corner kick flag, Hunter Alspaugh crossed it beautifully in the box where Tejan Singh put it in the net.
Coach Tinna Gallagher had this to say about her team's performance, "I am so proud of the girls. We have had a lot of games this week and we are low on numbers. They are doing what they need to be doing, taking care of their bodies and being mentally focused. They are seeing now that all the hard work they put into the season so far, from pre-season to tonight's win, is paying off. I am just so happy for them, we are getting the W's but most importantly they are having fun!"
The women's soccer team kicks off next against Andrew College in an away match on Saturday, September 30th. Go Eagles!
