Spartanburg Methodist Defeats Men’s Soccer

Oxford, GA – On a rainy Wednesday night, the Oxford College of Emory University men's soccer team was defeated by the Pioneers of Spartanburg Methodist College 3-2. The Eagles fall to 0-1-1, while the Pioneers improve to 3-4 for the season.

The Eagles were held scoreless in the first half as the Pioneers scored in the 28th and 36th minute to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the break.

In the second half, the Pioneers stretched their lead scoring their third goal in the 51st minute. The Eagles finally got on the board in the 73rd minute when sophomore Artemy Ivanov found classmate Kiernan Barket who blasted one into the back of the net for his first goal of the year. With a sense of hope, the Eagles continued to attack and Barket had a chance to score again but his shot hit the top crossbar and went out. In the final 5 minutes of the game, Barket received a pass from freshman teammate Kenneth Kleiman and scored his second goal of the game. However, this comeback was a little too late and the Pioneers ended up with the 3-2 win.

"I'm proud of the way my guys continued to fight and get themselves back into this game," commented Coach Moss-Brown. "We thank our fans that still came out, despite the rain, and cheered our guys on."

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, September 18th, against USC Salkehatchie. The game will begin at 12:30 PM.
