Emory Oxford Men’s Tennis Competes In Mississippi

Meridian, MS – The Emory Oxford men's tennis team traveled to Mississippi this weekend to compete against three NJCAA Division I opponents. The Eagles lost to both Jones College and Hinds Community College on Saturday (Feb. 9), but turned it around defeating Meridian Community College on Sunday (Feb. 10).   

The Eagles first competed against Jones College on Saturday morning and suffered a 5-4 loss. In doubles, sophomore Tate Coston and freshman Kavi Jain defeated their opponents 8-4. In singles, Jain dominated his opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Freshmen Kevin Yan and Orest Los also defeated their opponents in straight sets, with Yan winning 7-5, 6-4 and Los winning 7-6(7-4), 6-4.

That following afternoon, Oxford competed against Hinds Community College and lost 7-2. Yan won his match 3-6, 6-2 (10-6), while Los defeated his opponent in straight sets winning 6-4, 6-3.

On the second day of competition, the Eagles turned it around defeating Meridian Community College 7-2. In doubles, Coston and Jain won their second doubles match of the weekend defeating their opponents 8-2. Los and sophomore David George won their match 8-4. In singles, sophomore Julian McCarthy dominated his opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Jain won his match 4-6, 6-3 (10-5). Coston beat his opponent 3-6, 6-2 (10-8). George out lasted his opponent winning 6-2, 6-2 and Yan finished the weekend undefeated winning his match 6-2, 6-1.

"It was challenging weekend in Mississippi as we faced three NJCAA Division I teams," commented assistant coach Anna Hardin. "There were a few close matches that could have gone either way on that first day. Kevin (Yan) was great for us this weekend going undefeated in singles. Overall, the boys fought hard and closed out the weekend with a win versus Meridian."

The Eagles will play their first home match of the spring season on Saturday (Feb. 16) against USC Sumter. Matches will begin at 1:00PM.
