Highlanders Defeat Women Soccer, 3-0

Barnesville, GA – The Emory Oxford women's soccer team traveled south to face off against the Highlanders of Gordon State College. They lost 3-0 and dropped to 0-3 for the year while the Gordon State improved to 4-1-2.

The Highlanders struck first, scoring in the first three minutes of action. The Eagles had an opportunity to answer when first-year Maria Tsakalakos received a cross and had a shot on goal. The Highlanders goalie came up with the save. In the 15th minute, the Highlanders struck again to go up 2-0. They went into halftime with this lead.

In the second half, neither team was not getting many opportunities to score. The Eagles looked to have another chance when sophomore Isabela Schmalz had an opening and shot the ball with her left foot towards the goal. The Highlanders goalie made the save. Gordon State increased their lead right before the end of regulation to win 3-0. This is the first time this year that the Eagles have been shut out this season.

"We played tough Division I team today and I believe my girls still competed well against them," said Coach Ruth Geiger.

The Eagles will be back on the road as they face cross-town rivals Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. The game is on Monday, September 27th and will start at 7:00 PM.
