Women's Tennis Wins Two Matches in Alabama

The Emory Oxford women's tennis team traveled to Alabama this past weekend to compete against Central Alabama Community College and Coastal Alabama College. Both matches took place on Saturday in Alexander City.

On Saturday morning, the Eagles took on Central Alabama and won 6-3. They redeemed a 5-4 loss that took place on the Eagles' home court last weekend. In doubles play, the Eagles claimed only one victory on court three, when freshman duo Allie Lucky and Lily McCain won 8-4.

In singles, the Eagles went 5-1, with all of their wins coming in straight sets. Freshman Irene Wang won on court 1, 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Lara Crosby defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-3 to claim second singles. McCain got her second win on court three with a score of 6-1, 6-0. In fifth singles, sophomore Joanna Wu won 6-1, 6-2 and freshman Mayuri Charan won on court six, 6-0, 6-2.

Later that day, the Eagles played Coastal Alabama College and won 7-2. The Eagles secured two out of the three doubles matches with wins on courts two and three. Crosby and Charan defeated their opponents 8-6, while McCain and Lucky claimed their second doubles victory of the day 9-7.

The Eagles went 5-1 again in singles, winning on courts one, two, three, four and five. The winners were Wang (6-0, 6-1), freshman Emily Freestone (6-2, 6-7 (10-1)), Crosby (6-0, 6-3), McCain (6-1, 6-1) and Charan (6-3, 6-0).

"We competed very well this weekend against two tough teams," commented Coach Pernilla Hardin. "Their hard work is paying off in these matches."

The Eagles will play one more match before competing at Nationals. They will play SCAD Atlanta at home on Friday, October 15th, at 3:00 PM. Nationals will be in Peachtree City, GA, from October 29th-31st.
