Men’s Tennis Opens Up the Season in Mississippi

The Oxford College of Emory University men's tennis team played their first set of matches in Mississippi this weekend. They played Jones College, Hinds Community College and Meridian Community College in a span of three days. 

Due to the weather forecast, Oxford played Jones College on Friday night and lost 7-2. Sophomores Jahaan Sachdeva and Arie Golubenko picked up a win in second doubles with a score of 8-5. Classmate Oliver Catanzaro claimed sixth singles 6-2, 6-3. Golubenko dropped a hard-fought match in fifth singles, which ended in a 16-18 tiebreak. 

On Sunday, the Eagles defeated Hinds Community College 7-2 in the morning. Oxford ended up sweeping all the doubles matches and won four singles matches. The winners are listed below.

Doubles: 

  • Sophomores Tyler Yamato-Chang and Zach Ravel won 9-8 (7-5) on court one.
  • Sachdeva and Golubenko picked up an 8-5 win on court two.
  • Sophomore Ryan Talano and Catanzaro won on court three with a score of 8-2. 

Singles:

  • On court three, Sachdeva picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win.
  • His doubles teammate, Golubenko, won 6-1, 6-0 on the ensuing court.
  • Catanzaro won on court five, 6-2, 6-2 and Talano dominated on court six with a score of 6-0, 6-0. 

Oxford ended the trip with a Sunday afternoon matchup against Meridian Community College. The Eagles lost a close match, 4-5. 

Catanzaro and Talano won their second doubles match of the weekend, defeating their opponents on court three 8-3. In singles play, the Eagles picked up three wins. Golubenko secured a 6-3, 7-5 win on court four, while Catanzaro and Talano each picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory on courts five and six.

The Eagles will host their home opener on Friday, February 17th, against Coastal Alabama Community College. Matches are set to begin at 1:00 pm.
