Men’s Basketball Defeats Johnston on Alumni Appreciation Day

Oxford, GA – The Emory Oxford men's basketball team defeated the Jaguars of Johnston Community College 70-68. The Eagles improve to 11-10 for the season and are 2-3 in conference play. The Jaguars drop to 10-13 including 1-3 in the conference.

The Eagles had 4 players in double figures and were led by freshman Shane McCravy who scored 23 points. Fellow freshman Arturo Varela finished the game with 17 points, while classmates Jack Polzin and Thomas Powell scored 12 and 11 points each.

Sophomore Aaron Gerber led the Eagles in rebounding with 7, while McCravy and Varela each had a team-high 4 assists.

The Eagles found themselves trailing for most the game with the Jaguars leading by 11 at one point in the second half. However, a charge taken by sophomore Jaylen Simons help start an Eagles comeback. The Eagles outscored the Jaguars 36-28 in the latter part of the second half.

The Eagles took care of the basketball only turning it over 6 times, which is the lowest amount this season. Oxford did a great job getting to the free-throw line converting on 16-of-23 attempts, while only sending Johnston to the free-throw line 11 times.

"We played a great game overall and our guys kept competing to the very end," stated Roderick Stubbs. "Certain players came up big for us in the second-half, which helped us get this victory."

The Eagles will return to action as they travel to LaGrange College on Tuesday (Feb. 4th). Tipoff is at 8:00PM.
