Oxford, Ga. - The Emory Oxford basketball team narrowly lost to a tough conforence opponent Sandhills Community College Saturday afternoon. The final score was 75-73 in overtime.
The two teams played closely at the start of the first before the Eagles pulled away and dominated the rest of the half. Sophomores Ryan Kim, Anthony Vargas, Josh Kim and freshman Daniel Shin all hit three pointers at the end half of the first, including one from Josh Kim with seconds remaining, to put Emory Oxford up 42-29 going into halftime.
While the Eagles held the lead for most of the game, Sandhills fought back and was able to tie with a little over eight minutes to go in the second. For the remainder of the game, neither team led by more than three points.
With about a minute and a half left in the game, Ryan Kim tied the game at 66, which is what the score would remain headed into overtime. Kim tried for a three-pointer with seconds left on the clock, but was unable to make the shot to give the Eagles the win.
Kim hit a deep two-pointer with five seconds on the clock to bring the Eagles within one in overtime, but Sandhills shot a free throw to go back up two points and blocked a shot at the end to secure the win.
Ryan Kim had his first double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Josh Kim scored 18 points and Anthony Vargas added 15 with five rebounds. Freshman Michael Hoppner had eight rebounds and five assists.
The Eagles will next face Action Sports Academy at home on Monday, Jan. 29. Game time is 7 p.m.
