
Oxford, Ga. - The Emory Oxford women's soccer team defeated Gordon State College 2-1 in the team's first home match of the season.
Both teams played evenly throughout the first half, which ended in a tie at 0.
Freshman Renie Harris broke the tie with a goal early in the second half, kicking the ball over the goalie as she came out of the box to attempt the save.
Later in the half, sophomore Maria Shaw scored when she kicked the ball over the goalie's head, out of her reach. That put the home team up 2-0 with around 20 minutes left.
The visitors got on the board late in the second half, but were unable to tie the game.
Sophomore goalie Margaux Davis made multiple difficult saves to keep Gordon State off the scoreboard, including one midway through the second off of a corner kick. She made seven saves overall, including five in the second half.
Freshman Paloma Salazaar led the team with three shots.
The Eagles, now 1-1 on the season, will next face South Georgia State College at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13 at home.
